Background of the Study

Family planning education is crucial for promoting reproductive health, particularly in regions with high population growth rates and limited access to contraception. In Kogi State, like many other parts of Nigeria, there is a strong cultural resistance to family planning, compounded by misinformation, religious beliefs, and lack of access to contraceptive services (WHO, 2024).

Effective family planning education programs aim to inform individuals about the benefits of contraception, methods available, and the role of family planning in promoting maternal and child health. These programs are often delivered through healthcare facilities, schools, and mass media. However, despite the widespread availability of family planning services, contraceptive use remains low in Kogi State, especially among women in rural areas (Adebayo & Salami, 2024). This study assesses the effectiveness of family planning education in influencing contraceptive use among women in Kogi State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite national policies promoting family planning, Kogi State continues to experience high fertility rates, which can lead to maternal and child health complications. One major contributing factor is the inadequate knowledge about contraceptive methods and the resistance to using them due to cultural and religious barriers (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).

This study seeks to evaluate the impact of family planning education on contraceptive use, identify the barriers preventing widespread adoption of family planning, and recommend strategies to improve contraceptive uptake in Kogi State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of family planning education among women in Kogi State.
  2. To examine the relationship between family planning education and contraceptive use.
  3. To identify barriers that hinder the adoption of family planning methods.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of family planning education among women in Kogi State?
  2. How does family planning education influence contraceptive use in Kogi State?
  3. What barriers prevent the widespread adoption of family planning methods?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Family planning education has no significant effect on contraceptive use.
  2. Socio-cultural factors do not significantly influence the use of contraceptives.
  3. Strengthening family planning education will increase contraceptive uptake in Kogi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on women in Kogi State and evaluates how family planning education influences contraceptive use. Limitations include the reliance on self-reported data and potential biases in accessing hard-to-reach communities.
